Mt. Lebanon Father and Two Children Die in Apparent Murder-Suicide
Authorities in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, say a father and his two young children died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, in what police are treating as an apparent murder-suicide. Investigators have not publicly explained a motive, and several details remain under review.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the dead as Patrick Lynch, 42; James Lynch, 8; and Caroline Lynch, 6. All three lived in Mt. Lebanon, NBC News, WTAE and TribLive reported.
What police have said
Allegheny County police said the bodies were found a little after 4 p.m. Tuesday behind the Mt. Lebanon Municipal Building, near a neighboring parking garage on Municipal Way / Washington Road. A police statement quoted by NBC News said first responders found an adult male and two children with injuries from an “apparent fall,” attempted life-saving measures, and that medical professionals pronounced all three deceased at the scene.
“Preliminary information suggests that this incident is a murder-suicide and there is no danger to the community,” police said, per NBC News.
Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Jason Haberman told reporters the incident was not being treated as an accident. “There will be a significant amount of trauma associated with this event for the community,” he said, adding that everyone in Mt. Lebanon would know someone involved. Haberman asked the public to keep the victims’ family in their thoughts. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Allegheny County police were assisting.
TribLive reported the garage was later reopened the same evening after the scene was cleared.
What is still unknown
As of the most recent reporting cited here, investigators have not publicly detailed what led up to the deaths, how exactly the fall occurred, or whether notes, witnesses or other evidence will be released. Cause-and-manner findings beyond the preliminary murder-suicide assessment may still be pending from the medical examiner. This account sticks to confirmed public statements and avoids unverified speculation.
Community response
The Mt. Lebanon School District said it was deeply saddened and asked that the family’s privacy be respected. TribLive reported Markham and Washington elementary schools closed Wednesday; WTAE quoted Superintendent Dr. Melissa Friez urging anyone struggling to seek help and pointing families to Resolve Crisis Services (1-888-796-8226, 24 hours).
Honey Bee Haven day care, which WTAE reported one of the children had attended earlier Tuesday, closed Wednesday so staff could grieve with professional counseling support. The center said teachers were devastated and asked for care for everyone who loved the children.
TribLive also noted that Caroline lived with Williams syndrome, citing her mother Anna Lynch’s prior public comments through a local inclusion nonprofit — context neighbors may already know, not a cause of the crime.
